How can you get involved in the work of Cortland County Mutual Aid?
HELP WITH OUR FOOD JUSTICE PROGRAMS
The Really Free Market food distribution can always use volunteers, especially if you have a vehicle and can help with transportation of food to the market or with cleanup at the end. Volunteer shifts are loosely from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. for food pickup and delivery, and from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. for setup and cleanup, though these are very flexible windows! In addition we are consistently in search of sources of food, donations or gift cards, which always require volunteer support to reach out to local businesses and farms, etc.
Help with our Blue Food Cabinets project comes in many forms: you can stock a cabinet when you are able to donate food, you can volunteer to be a cabinet steward who keeps the cabinet clean and updates the organizing committee about any broken hinges, etc., and you can even host a cabinet on a spot near you that you have permission to use. Some community groups have even ‘adopted’ one of our existing food cabinets (which are spread out over Cortland County) as a group project, pledging to stock it collectively over a month or similar period of time.
HELP WITH CONNECTING NEIGHBORS VIRTUALLY
Join our Facebook page (Cortland County Mutual Aid) and connect people in need with those who can help, offer support as you are able, or become an admin and assist with reviewing posts and new members. Follow us on Instagram (cortlandmutuallaid), tag us in your posts related to mutual aid work, and share our posts to reach more people.
JOIN THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE OR ATTEND AN OPEN MEETING
A small group of organizers meets once a month virtually to review our programs, discuss new initiatives and assist each other in the work of creating the supportive, connected community we all want to live in. We have an annual open meeting where the public is invited, and anyone can come to learn more about our organization. If you have ideas to share more urgently, we welcome guests to attend our meetings, to support their ideas or involvement in our programs.
